Pulau Kapas is really rare name to us last few years, this is due to this Island is still in development. My first time being there was with all my classmate during our semester break 2001. We rent our campus’s bus to send us to Marang, Terengganu. Pulau Kapas is a small island, just over 2km long and 1km at its widest point. Since it is so close – only 6km from the mainland, visitors seldom stay overnight but our trip leader decide to rent a camp site at Pulau Kapas. We able to reach the island in 30 minutes time by fishing boat from Marang Jetty. At that time there is only few speed boat services available so we decide to use fishing boat services at reach Pulau Kapas around 10-11 am.We rent Makcik Gemok Beach Resort and the bad part is when heavy rain suddenly happen and all our tent been demolished. So, our leader rush to move us to dorm. But, I’m stay at tent with my friend since I don’t want to loss my new tent :p Luckily nothing bad happen.

I had lost a lot of memories on this trip, so I’m just sharing everything that still remain. I’m just remember the accommodation at that time is very poor. Our camp site is not at proper condition and the toilet is the most trouble there. It’s not easy to get a clean drink water and the food and beverage price is quite expensive. I got a big problem, since I only can drink mineral water and can’t stand dirty toilet. I rather have a bath at outside toilet wearing my shirt and paid for mineral water in which cost me triple than regular price. My trip to Pulau Kapas is disaster!!!

But, that was last few years..Right now Pulau Kapas already well develop and offer more place to visit around there such as Pulau Gemia. As it only takes 10 minutes by speed boat from Marang Jetty, no wonder most of the locals just go for a day trip to the island. If you want to spend more time there, you can stay at the resorts in the island. There are about 9 main resorts in Pulau Kapas and 1 resort in Pulau Gemia. Chalet, dorm and room rates ranges from RM20 to RM300 per night. Before this, there is no resort at Pulau Gemia we need to return back at the same day.

More over a lot of activities can be enjoy by us such as snorkelling, scuba diving, island tour, squid catching and turtle watching. The fees per person depend on the activities; Scuba diving (RM90 to RM220, depending on the number of dives), snorkelling (RM25), jungle?trekking (RMIG), island tour (RM20) and for squid catching, the usual charge is RM400 for one boat of 10 persons. I’ still remember the jungle-trekking at night, I’m not join my classmate since I got a fever due to stay inside the tent during heavy rain. But, still left a few members who enjoy squid BBQ and karaoke.  I’m just stay at seaside with them, homesick. There are no phone coverage so I’m just play a game inside my phone.

For those who want to travel to Pulau Kapas, if you are driving from Kuala Lumpur, use the Karak and East Coast Highway and go towards Kuala Terengganu after you exit the Highway. Follow the coastal Highway 3 and you will pass the town of Kemaman, Kijal, Kerteh, Dungun, Rantau Abang before reaching Marang. The journey will take you 7 hours. Once you are in Marang, follow the sign board Jeti Marang and you will arrive here in 5 minutes. From Kuantan, drive north about 400kms and upon reaching Marang town and its jetty, take a boat to Pulau Kapas. From Kota Baru, the distance to Marang is about 3001kms. From Sultan Mahmud airport, it’s 50kms. There are plenty of car park bays available for your use.
